R³ Devotional - Day 307

R³ Devotional - Day 307 -Mark 11

By: Anderson Baptist Church

In Mark 11, Jesus curses a fig tree that had leaves but no fruit. Immediately after, He enters the Temple and drives out the money-changers, accusing them of turning a "house of prayer for all nations" into a "den of robbers." The next day, the disciples see the fig tree completely withered. These two events are intentionally linked by Mark to deliver one sharp message.

Real Life Principle: Authentic Faith Must Bear Fruit
The principle is that outward religious appearance (leaves) is worthless without corresponding inner life and spiritual action (fruit).

Relevant Applications.
  •  The fig tree was full of leaves, signaling to a hungry traveler that fruit should be present, but it had none. It represented a misleading appearance.

  • The Temple, with its elaborate rituals, sacrifices, and massive structure, was the center of Jewish worship (the "leaves"). However, the activity of the money-changers and sellers had choked out its true purpose of prayer and access for all nations (the lack of "fruit").

  • Jesus is condemning hypocrisy and religious fruitlessness—a life that looks good on the outside but produces nothing of spiritual value for God or others.

  • Scrutinize Your Life: Don't confuse activity with fruitfulness. Being busy with Christian service ("leaves") is not the same as cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, etc. - Galatians 5:22-23) or impacting the world with righteousness ("fruit").

  • Worship Integrity: Ensure your private, individual walk with God is genuine, not just your public participation in church. Are you being changed by your faith, or are you simply maintaining a religious façade for others?

  • Check Your Heart's "Temple": Just as Jesus cleared the Temple court, we must be diligent to remove worldly practices, selfish motives, and anything that hinders our heart from being a "house of prayer" where God is genuinely honored.

Ready Action Steps
  • Identify the "Leaves": List 1-3 things you do that make you look religious but might be empty of true spiritual life (e.g., posting quotes, attending events without engaging, or performing rituals out of habit).

  • Pray for "Fruit": Commit to a focused spiritual discipline this week (like daily prayer or Scripture reflection) that is designed not to be seen by others, but to cultivate inner fruit (e.g., asking God to help you respond to a difficult situation with patience instead of anger).

  • Clear the "Court": Identify one area of your heart or routine that has been taken over by self-interest (like the Temple court was taken over by merchants). Take a concrete step to remove that hindrance and dedicate that area back to God's purpose (e.g., canceling a non-essential activity to create time for quiet prayer).
