R³ Devotional - Day 304

R³ Devotional - Day 304 - Matthew 19

By: Anderson Baptist Church

"Jesus said to him, 'If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.'" — Matthew 19:21

Real Life Principle

True discipleship requires surrendering what we cling to in order to fully follow Christ. Jesus doesn’t just invite us to believe—He calls us to release anything that competes with Him for our trust, identity, or security.

Relevant Application

Personal:
  • Identify what you tend to rely on more than Christ—possessions, status, comfort, control.
  • Ask: “What is Jesus inviting me to lay down so I can follow Him more freely?”

Family:
  • Discuss with your household what it means to live with open hands.
  • Model generosity and simplicity in your home—giving, serving, and trusting God together.

Church:
  • Challenge for the congregation to examine what might be hindering full obedience—fear of change, attachment to tradition, or comfort.
  • Encourage each other that surrender is not loss—it’s the gateway to deeper joy and eternal reward.

Action Steps:

  1. Reflect: Spend 10 minutes today in prayer asking, “Lord, what am I holding onto that’s keeping me from following You fully?”
  2. Release: Choose one tangible thing to surrender this week—whether it’s time, money, or control—and offer it to God in faith.
  3. Encourage: Share your surrender story with someone in your church or small group. Invite them to do the same.
  4. Lead: If you're guiding others, create space for testimonies of surrender and renewal. Use Matthew 19 to spark a church-wide conversation about costly obedience and eternal reward.
