R³ Devotional - Day 200

R³ Devotional - Day 200 - 2 Kings Chapter 18

By: Anderson Baptist Church

2 Kings 18 describes the reign of Hezekiah, king of Judah, who ruled during a turbulent period marked by Assyrian dominance.

Hezekiah is praised for his devotion, doing "what was right in the eyes of the Lord" (v. 3). He removed high places, smashed sacred stones, and cut down Asherah poles, reversing idolatry in Judah.
Hezekiah’s reforms were not just religious but cultural, restoring Judah’s identity as a nation under God. His leadership contrasted with his father Ahaz’s compromises (v. 4).

Hezekiah faced immense pressure from Assyria, led by Sennacherib. Despite paying tribute, Assyria besieged Jerusalem, and their commander mocked Judah’s reliance on God (vv. 13–22).

The Assyrian commander’s psychological warfare aimed to demoralize Judah, questioning Hezekiah’s leadership and God’s power (vv. 19–35). Hezekiah and his people remained silent, trusting in God’s deliverance.

Real Life Principles:
  • Commitment to spiritual integrity involves decisive action to remove influences that lead away from truth or moral grounding.

  • Trusting in a higher purpose or divine guidance sustains us through overwhelming challenges, even when external voices belittle that faith.

  • Effective leadership requires bold, sometimes unpopular, decisions to restore integrity and purpose to a community or organization.

  • In the face of intimidation or manipulation, maintaining composure and discernment prevents rash decisions.

Relevant Life Applications:
  • Silence can be a strategic response, allowing time for wisdom to prevail.

  • Know when to tear down and build up.

  • Know how to respond to voices that undermine our vision, and values.

  • Silence can be golden until clear direction is given.

Ready Action Steps:
  • Meditate on God's word.

  • Seek wise counsel.

  • Trust God’s sovereignty.
