R³ Devotional - Day 144

R³ Devotional - Day 144 - Psalm 109

By: Lee Dye

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.  A phrase our parents would teach us when we were little.  But words sometimes hurt.  But they can do so much more.   I recently heard from a wiseman; “the foundation of ministry is Character, not a professional skill”.  As a Christian, we should place great value on our character. Galatians 5:22,23 summarizes the character of the Christian: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control”.  Definitely a high standard, but we have a worthy God that we should be Honored to be able to represent with these characteristics.   It also makes for an easy target for Satan and his followers to strike at us when we fail.  “Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark!” – James 3:5

As David penned Psalm 109, he speaks to God crying out in a way that we want to cry out when someone has spoken evil against us, especially against our Christian character.    David goes straight to God.  Verse one:  “Be not silent, O God of my Praise!”.   All he’s tried to do is love on people, do good for them, but they attack him, make false accusations, lie about him.  Verse 3; “they encircle me with lying tongues”.

We get into God’s work, teaching, preaching, sharing the Gospel, loving on people.  Doing what we think God has called us to do.  Next thing we know, there are rumors and lies, people questioning our motives, integrity;  questioning our character.    David said “I am poor, and needy, my heart is stricken, I am going like a shadow” (vs 22,23).     I know I’ve felt that way myself.  Empty, tired, ready to give up.   To the point David asked God to let their curses be on them!   “May his Days be few”!   Speaking of evil doers.

Real Life Principles
But in all this, David called on God.   In verses 26-29, we still see David lifting God.  He asks God to let them see their evil and curses be as the clothes as dishonor, and all goodness be of God’s hand.   David Goes on to praise God, and instead of David taking action, he turns to His God for his God to take action.

Relevant Life Reflections
  • We will be cursed and prosecuted.
  • We will be lied about and accused.
  • We do have a God that will stand at our right hand (the needy).
  • We do have a God worthy of Praise; EVEN in the midst of our trials.

Ready Action Steps
30. With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord;
I will praise him in the midst of the throng.

31.For he stands at the right hand of the needy one,
to save him from those who condemn his soul to death.
