R³ Devotional - Day 131
R³ Devotional - Day 131 2 Samuel 10
By: Kevin King
In 2 Samuel chapter 10 verses 1 and 2 we see Nahash the king of the amorites has died and his son Hanun become king. We see King David had a heart to show kindness to Hanun as his father had showed kindness to David. However Hanun did not receive David's heart of kindness as what it was. And he returned to David and his men evil for the good David was trying to do.
Real life principles:
Have there been times in your life you've tried to do something good for somebody, to only have them return evil for your good? As followers of Christ, we have a desire to do good to those around us and to show the love of Christ to those around us. This is Who We Are and who we should desire to be. But often people that do not have Christ or even profess the name of Christ do not receive our heart of kindness towards them as simply what it is. In many instances this is because this is not who they are, someone that truly loves and cares about his fellow man.
Relevant life applications:
Jeremiah17:9 says "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?"
The flip side of that is as followers of Jesus Christ we can trust Ezekiel 36 that says that God has given us a new heart and taken out our heart of stone.
So as we read the rest of second Samuel chapter 10 we see Hanun returned evil for good, but God was with his people and gave them victory. We can see a clear contrast of King David and his men trusting God to give them victory while on the other hand, King Hanun trusted in his own thinking and the power of man only to be defeated by God's children.
In my lifetime my best thinking and my best strategies with all the intellect that I have, has brought me more pain and sorrow than I could even list. But the times of my life where I've truly trusted God and put his kingdom first, is when I have truly seen the hand of God work in my life and work in my family's life. I have continued to see his victories show up throughout my life as I put him first.
Ready action steps:
Don't be discouraged if the love and goodness that you try to share with others is received with rejection or even retaliation. Continue the good fight, continue to do good. It's not for the honor of men, but for the honor of God and obedience to him.
Don't allow the world to dictate to you when you should stop doing good. It's a commandment of God to do good. So go out and do it.
Galatians 6:9-10:
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith."
Word of encouragement:
At the end of 2nd Samuel chapter 10 we see that David and his men had victory. The enemies of God became their servants.
Continue the good fight there is Victory with God.
