R³ Devotional - Day 129
R³ Devotional - Day 129 2 Samuel 9
By: Brandon Novosad
I once went to a Rockets game and didn't realize how great the seats were, until we arrived. What I remember most about the game was actually the halftime show. It was one of those artists who shows up with a large empty canvas, board, wall, etc. and doesn't tell you what he is going to do. You are forced to use your own imagination as he begins to shape and create a picture. Your mind goes a million different directions as you try and figure out what he is creating. Once you begin to see, you are blown away at the imagination, the creativeness, and the sharp eye that it takes to forge such beauty.
That is exactly what David is doing in chapter 9. Instead of taking his free time away from all the battles won, and conquering, to see what is in it for him, he turns his attention to projecting the kindness of his God onto people he feels deserves God's grace and love. David is painting a picture. Just as God looks at us as the sons and daughters of Jesus, so did David look at the son of Jonathan, and without judgment, offered him complete compassion and undeserving kindness simply because he was Jonathan's son. This is Saul's grandson mind you. He could have easily been a harsh, vocal enemy of David, and yet David did not ask that, or care about his stance. He simply sought him out and offered kindness and fulfilled a promise he once made. The fulfillment of a promise to a son, because of who his father is, and not because of what the son had done or said. It's a beautiful picture painted by David, and one that will eventually be painted again by Jesus Christ. This is a man after God's own heart.
Real Life Principles:
God's grace, love, and kindness isn't just for us to take.
Relevant Life Application:
These gifts can and should be given by all of us as well, and not just received.
Ready- Life Action Steps:
Consider the beauty that can be shown each and every day, in offices, in breakrooms, on the street corners, on job sites, in hospital rooms, in courthouses, in our own homes and communities, when we fully and completely portray the beauty that is Jesus Christ, just as David did.
