R³ Devotional - Day 122

R³ Devotional - Day 122 Psalm 133

By: Kyle Childress

When I was a teenager, me and a buddy of mine were out one Saturday afternoon riding around in my dad’s old 1946 Willis Jeep. We were miles away from home on some old backwoods’ trails, testing the old jeep for its ability to off-road, when something happened to the engine, and it overheated. As we investigated, we found that the belt that ran the water pump had broken and was completely missing. In that day, there were no cell phones to call for help with. We were tasked with figuring it out or walk for miles. We came up with a crazy idea! We took the shoestrings out of our shoes, doubled them, tripled them, quadrupled them, and fashioned a makeshift fan belt. Believe it or not that that creation made it all the way home with no problem! There was no way that one shoestring would have done it alone but with all of them together it was plenty strong.

Psalm 133 is all about how God’s people are blessed when we are in unity with one another. We are stronger together than we are as individuals. Just like those shoestrings working together, we are sufficient when together and weaker when alone. King David realizes this as he writes this song of ascents.

Real Life Principles:

Vs. 1 - When we walk in unity it is pleasant and good.

Vs. 2 - Unity is a precious thing. King David writes of the anointing of Aaron and how it was done with such a sacred oil, and how it was such a sacred act. He knew what that was like as he himself was anointed King by the prophet Samuel.

Vs. 3 – Unity covers all kinds of shortcomings. As the dew covers the mountains, unity of spirit will cover the things that we cannot do alone.

Relevant Life Application:

We must work together as the body of Christ, the church.

We must understand the strength we have in the body of Christ when we work together.

We must see how good, pleasant and sacred unity of spirit is to God.

Ready- Life Action Steps:

Get involved in the local church, the body of believers. Don’t just attend. Be unified in spirit and vision with the mission and ministry of the church.

Remember the motto of Anderson Baptist Church, “We are a church of REAL people committed to Christ, RELEVANT to those who need Christ, and READY to be on mission for Christ.”

REAL people – committed to working together, to be RELEVANT as a unified body to lead people Jesus as their Lord and Savior, and READY the work together to get the job done. We must remember to love God, love each other, and love the lost. We are in this together, and we a strong in unity to get the job done!

Just like that belt of many strands of shoestrings, I think you will find that in our unity, we are more that sufficient!
