R³ Devotional - Day 118
R³ Devotional - Day 118 Psalm 81, 88, 92-93
By: Justin McCoy
I have often heard that the Bible is a “love letter” from God. The book of Psalms is a collection of prayers, songs, and lamentations, all (in some way) in reverence to God. In these few chapters we cover today, we see a collection of palms that to me depict what many of us experience in life today, especially in my own personal story/testimony.
In Psalm 81, the author is communicating a remembrance to the reader of God freeing them from the hand of Pharaoh. God heard their call, freed them, and then we see they forgot about what He had done…they turned to other gods, and the Psalm depicts that God is there waiting for them to find their way back to Him.
As we read Psalm 88, we see the author illustrating a person distanced from God and feeling the “punishment” of and separation from God. He is crying out in desperation as we dive deep into the scenes depicted in this psalm.
Psalms 92-93 show a “change of tune” from our previous two, recognizing God’s presence and blessings and “singing” of His glory, power, and majesty. We cannot miss in these four psalms, the story of many believers’ lives. God is our heavenly Father (we are His creation), and we typically and often fall victim to the sinful ways of the world. The sin in our lives has consequences, leaving us dumbfounded as to why, and many times crying to Him, wondering why we are suffering. And then we truly encounter Him, we accept His gift of grace through Jesus, realize His presence and His blessings, and then sing to the world about Him and give Him the honor and reverence He deserves!
Real Life Principles:
Life hits hard…especially in today’s fast-paced, high-competition, sin-loving world. We have a choice to make, and that choice should be easy, however, we see many running from it. We need to recognize our Creator and what He offers to us. That step gets us well on our way to fully trusting in and living for Him…a step that can profoundly change our lives and deliver us from what can feel like abandonment and punishment. We must, however, remember that trusting in Him does not guarantee a trouble-free life, but it does guarantee that He will be with us through it all!
Relevant Life Applications:
When you're down…when you are feeling far from God, seek Him. Remember His glory, His deliverance, and His grace. This not only applies to us but to others we see lost in this cycle. Our jobs do not end with accepting His grace, our jobs are to share that with others. You are never too far from Him…seek Him every day!
Being Ready with Life Action Steps:
It can be extremely easy to withdraw in tough times…don’t! Seek other believers in those times to surround you with prayer, counsel, and support. Actively seek others who are caught up in the cycle of being drawn away from God. When God gives you the nudge to help, follow-through. He could be speaking to others through your words…He could be working on others through your actions. The salvation we find in God through Jesus should be something we are so glad to have that we want it for others!
