R³ Devotional - Day 101
R³ Devotional - Day 101 1 Samuel Chapters 13-14
By: Kevin King
We see in the beginning of first Samuel 13, that Saul had been King for about 2 years and was already at war with the Philistines. The Hebrews were afraid and hiding in caves and even leaving the promised land on the other side of the Jordan River.
The Philistines were gathering together to go to war against Saul. Before going into battle Saul knew that he was to put God first. And by putting God first he was to wait on Samuel the prophet to come and sacrifice to the Lord in the way instructed by the Lord.
When Samuel did not show up at the appointed time. We see in verse 10, Saul took it upon himself to do the duties that God instructed Samuel to do. In other words Saul did not wait on the Lord, he took it upon himself to do the duties of the prophet.
Also in verse 10, we see Samuel arrives and saw that Saul did not wait on him. In verse 13 Samuel reprimanded Saul and told him that he acted foolishly. The foolishness of not waiting on God's timing and the foolishness of not being obedient to God's instructions.
Real Life Principles:
As followers of Jesus Christ it is our first duty to be obedient to God. Obedience often requires waiting on the Lord.
Obedience is simple but hard. It's simple because we have the word of God that gives us our instructions to be obedient to.
But it's hard because we live in the flesh and often we forget who we are(children of God)and follow the flesh instead of the spirit of God.
We may find that waiting on the Lord is not always comfortable. Many of us make the mistake of forcing situations because we want it now. Later to find out that if we had waited on the Lord it would have been much better than anything that we could do on our own.
In verse 13, Sauls unwillingness to wait on the Lord and disobedience to the Lord cost him his kingdom. Had he had waited, Samuel says his kingdom would have lasted forever.
Relevant Life Applications:
I have personally experienced almost 20 years of loss trying to make something happen in my own strength & not waiting on the Lord. Even making the same mistake Saul did in saying it was for God. It was actually for myself.
What is it in your life that you need to wait on the Lord for? What are you trying to make happen in your own strength? Be obedient to God, and wait on the Lord and see what God is going to do. It will be better than anything you could ever do in your own strength.
Ready Action Steps:
We have the word of God, we have the spirit of God, and we have a relationship with God. God is faithful he will lead us, he will direct us, he will instruct us. Be patient, whatever you're going through, whatever is next in your life, God is faithful, he will never leave you and never forsake you you can trust him.
